1" Flat Double Bevel 1/16" FC wagon tracks help please

I recently took a practice test with 1/16" wire Lincoln 71M Fluxcore on a 1" double bevel with 1/4" gap and 1/4" backing in the flat position. After cutting a section out, I had good penetration at the root but slag inclusions on either side of it. I have taken similar tests with .045 wire and have never had this problem. Any input on this is greatly appreciated! I was running about 29-30 volts and 300 wfs with c02 gas.

I've had only limited dual shield experience, but it has lead me to believe that it's a finnicky beast. Every combination of wire and gas changes things just a little, but my experience has been that gun angle is the most critical element. Do read up on the wire that you are using though, and make sure you follow the reccommended gas type and gas flow and amp settings, they'll get you in the ballpark and may be quite different from what you're running for solid core.

What I found, was that there was a very narrow gun angle range, and what worked for me was not far off vertical. If you drag, you get a weird looking track on top of the weld. If you get a chance to practice, do 5 welds in a row - the center one at vertical gun, the first 2 at very little push and slight push, and the last 2 at very little drag and slight drag. Cut/grind the welds open and one will be better than the others.

Your own personal gun pattern affects it too - whether you are using a forward/backstep pattern, continuous forward movement, or some variation on a triangle/circle pattern. Some patterns do trap the flux.

Had the same problem at one company and my solution was to get a file and power wheel after every bead.
Or if you can use a grinder flatten the root then wire wheel it.

I had a similar problem using ESAB. Cored wire. I had our supplier get a rep to come loOk at the problem. At first glance he said I probably was holding to verticals or slightly pushing the puddle. He ran a bead dragging the puddle. Same issue. He then said the base metal was to dirty. Lol. I was running 30 volts and 350 wfs. I have since slows the wfs to 290 and found a good angle to drag the puddle. Better results but not always inclusion free.
