Cast welding old engine heads and blocks

My only experience is HR steel arc weld. I guess I could still run a bead. only 7018 and 6013 applications. I am interested in knowing if the old school blocks and heads that are being thrown out could be salvaged? I have a refacing ability already, so we don't need to go there. Just can cast be welded to be of years of service in a engine?
