"Not all Chinese products are junk....although many are!..one Reader has been using Riland Welders with great results "
This is a quick demo of a longevity combination tig, stick, plasma cutter unit.
Previously, there was a video posted here of one irate and disgruntled customer who took out his frustrations on a chinese made welding machine with a sledgehammer.
I mean he beat the living pi$$ out of it.
The company was trying hard to satisfy him and they must have been successful in getting him to remove the video.
Well good for them.
If they made it right, they deserve to have the negative video removed. And if they refused, they deserved for the world to see.
That video was much more entertaining than this one but it sure wasn’t helping the welding machine company much.
The one good thing that came from people seeing a guy beat the pi$$ out of a Chinese made welder is that is got a lot of response from both sides of the fence.
Some readers insisted all chinese made welders were junk, but some were more open minded.
The comments at the bottom of the page are the responses we got.
One response I found particularly interesting was from a guy who said he really did his homework on Chinese made welders and settled on a brand called Riland.
Basically what he says is that he would love to own all Millers or Lincoln but simply could not afford it.
Being able to expand his line of welding equipment by purchasing welders at one third the cost of name brand units made his welding business more capable.
Political arguments aside, its hard to argue with a guy who is just trying to make a living.
A 160 amp AC/DC tig welder combination plasma cutter/combination stick welder, all for about 7-800 bucks?
I am very tempted to buy one.
I'll be honest, I have been tempted to try out one of these cheap Chinese tig welders. I am very curious about how they weld, but I am just not willing to gamble 800 bucks to find out.
I am kind of skeptical.
I think that's the hook really. Everyone secretly wonders and even hopes that these welders might weld almost as good as a Miller or Lincoln for about one fourth the price.
And by the way...Does anyone remember the YUGO?
It was advertised as "no frills" and it cost a whole bunch less than any of the other makes. The car looked fine on the showroom floor. People hoped that it would be like the VW beetle..just cheap basic transportation,..but dependable.
and then in about 2 years the only time the word YUGO was mentioned was in the punchline of a joke....
But what about Hyundai? they weren't taken very seriously at first. But now, they are supposed to have good safety and quality ratings. Could it be that Longevity tig welders are continuously improving?...you know Kaizen!!
Seriously, We have all seen these Chinese Tig Welders on Ebay and other places. They are the subject of lots of chatter on the welding forums and 4 wheel drive enthusiast forums. The Chatter usually ends up in a "Buy American" debate and the debate never really resolves.
We as Americans have come to expect really Cheap goods AND a good standard of living.
I am pretty sure having both is not sustainable.
In the meantime, it would be great if we could get past all the buy American banter. I mean seriously, things have drifted so far that to suggest we buy only American made products is almost being hypocritical.
Even the staunchest union man with a "buy American" bumper sticker on his Chevy truck owns plenty of Chinese products.
It is what it is.
So here is what I really want to know...Any of you reading this have any experience with Chinese made tig welders?
What is your take? Are they good? Are they bad? Do you care?
