DIY Twostroke pipes RZ350

by Martin K.
(Germany)

Some 6 month ago I got myself a cheap 180A TIG welder and started a bit of practicing.

For the second project I chose to build some pipes for my RZ350.

Material 0.75 mm mild steel, 1.6 mm tungsten electrode, 7 l/min Argon, 0.7 Hz pulsed between 63 and 50 A. Mostly welded without additional material.

I'm not done yet but that wont be the last pipes I did ;-)

Well you may have a look here:

You need to get an account and log in to see the pics (and there's lots of ...)

The bike lift was done in mostly the required sizes, only reduced the thickness on some parts (If I remember right it said 3 mm and I got the 2 mm rectangular profiles much cheaper ...)

thanks for the reply. that`s some serious power you got from that engine, did you went for powerband or peak hp? porting? silencer? nice work

what i`ll be building, being on a race bike i don`t expect it to last long but don`t want to break in the middle of a moto...

any comments on how you mounted it? silentblocks, springs?

you gave me an excellent idea when mentioned stainless did you use 300 series? (i have a bunch of 304 scraps in 0,8 mm thick) what settings did you use for welding the stainless, autogenous also?. i`ll check the software. right now i`m working from an old book from graham bell

thanks a lot

ps: went by the link you gave on the bike lift post, did you use the same materials listed in the plans?

sorry for so many questions :)

Have done 5 sets by now (even one in stainless) and none of them had cracks yet. One even survived a hard crash on a track day.
The pipes perform well - dynoed the bike at 70 rear wheel HP (> 80 crank).

Rust is an issue in mild steel - you need some paintwork (clear or black).

Software used was cone.exe from here: www.pulserate.com

by: peter

hi just wanted to ask how are the welds holding, cracking issues, etc.
how is the material handling rust? any finish on it?
did you use any kind of software or calculus for determining pipe design, sections...
