I'm an old timer and that's how I welded truck frame rails to
shorten or lengthen the wheel base in "1957". Angle iron legs were clamped fore and aft of a careful flame cut. They got a
fish plate bolted to the inside of the channel after welding.
Never had a comeback.

this is something an old time welder taught me when i was starting out, so for whatever it's worth i'm going to pass it on, for non-code welding only,before vertical-up welding run a very hot pass from top to bottom. this works very good on rusted or corroded material
