Down hill stick "spreading butter" :) by: Anonymous
Downhand welding can also be done on heavy pipe material also. Proper fit ups and landings are very important. I find a three thirytwo gap and landing the best with a one eight rod. Set your machine to a proper temperture. Poor fitups cause, lack of penatration or internal undercut. I cannot over say how inportant the fitup is. The easy way to set your heat use a scrap, is start an arc, pull it up then bring it into your puddle drag your rod and try to snuff it out. Then turn it up about five to ten degrees above snuff out temp.

spreading butter? lol by: [meph]
what was said was great, but i'd like to add that typicall you only run downhill on thinner metals to better control heat. HOWEVER it can be done with thicker metals, but why? unless you have to?
