Pipe Welding Prep NEW
by: Bash

Hey there, just wondering what you prefer for your pipe prep. I am getting mixed opinions on land and gap size.

For an 8" Sch 40 pipe in 6g position, 6010 root pass and 7018 fill/cap (1/8" rod) would a 1/8" gap and land be sufficient? I feel as if the 1/8" land might be a bit excessive and not allow for full penetration. I was planning to run the root at about 90 amps.

Thanks in advance.

? About an old miler modle #mp-65e NEW
by: Tony

When I start wellding it starts leaving behind lots of small pebles how can I stop that from happening?
I'm using a 6010 on my first stringer, 7018 1/8in, 7018 5/32, and finishing with 7018 3/16. But as soon as I start it's starts leaving a hell of a lot of little pebles. By the way it's an electric welder pleas give me some advice on what I should do to prevent this!

limited practice NEW
by: Marky

If you are fairly new to 7018s,heres a tip I think will vastly improve your efforts.Keep in mind textbook rod angles are rough guides only and I have discarded them long ago. You can turn up amperage high and then control the "heat" simply by changing rod angle. If you point into the puddle with rod this is hotter, and if you point forward ahead of puddle it gets colder, but you must stay in the puddle. This works in any position and in this way I always run hot and never change amperage just to accomodate position. As you're running hot and getting puddle to melt everthing in it's path the 1-2-3 count for pauses on edges diminishes to a quick 1-2 count.I use this method everytime I weld pipe and I do not fail. Don't be afraid to change angle drastically, experiment and you'll find you'll be able to drive amperage up and up and still be able to "handle the heat". I would like to hear back from you as to how this works for you please.

weld test NEW
by: Marky

Remember your principles and practices as they are the same for all weld processes. But you should take some time to burn a few rods the day before test at least. If you weave, weld the edges, the middle will take care of itself. I prefer a one two count.
