I use this at work all the time. I weld Evaporators. We use this on all our connections to header welds helps to reduce warping in our pipe work.

My dad taught me to do that for pretty much everything. set the welder 20-30% hotter than you would normally and just make a puddle, get off, move, repeat.
I haven't had any breakage problems as long as you set the welder hot enough that you'd blow holes if you were doing a normal continuous weld. you get really nice penetration and a concave to just flat bead profile instead of a big crown.
