You hit it on the head bro. The sharpeners can make a difference but lets be honest we have all seen some pretty amazing welds made by old school guys sharpening their tungstens on the bench grinder. My take is this. These sharpeners can make a good welder a better welder but will not make a bad welder and adequate welder. Its a nice toy to have but not really needed. I think the best bang for your buck is the Stilo Tig. Those little honeys allow you to sharpen more of the tungsten before you have to toss it because its to small.
