Not really about the tungsten sharpener

I am just learning TIG and other welding.I was wondering more about the angle or taper of the electrode. The more experienced welders at work use a small or short taper about 1/8" to maybe 3/16" long and another guy tapers it to about 1/4 " long.Does this actually matter or is it just a personal preference? I have tried both ways and really have not noticed any difference, but I am just starting out and wouldn't be able to tell if there was a difference.

-------------------------------------------------

It makes a difference...just not much.

long tapers are better for thin metal and low amps,

short tapers are better for thicker metal and higher amps,

hope this helps,

jody

tips stay cleaner

A longer tip stays cleaner on mild steel and allows you to weld longer with out changing your tip.
