Novice Welder

I hope to be as good a welder some day. There must be very little air movement around his welding area and he moves fast enough that the metal doesn't corrode. I don't own a tig torch yet, just a stick but i'm wondering if you could just leave the gas on even while not welding or have a trigger that allows you to have it half down for gas and then full down to lite up and gas.
