tips for setting the right amperage

how do i set my gas driven welder for different gauges of steel? I have a lincoln ranger 16 hp which I have just bought and don't know if I'm setting the current right .It is used and did not come with instructions .My only welding experience is on a wire feed which I have become good at but who can't? Do you know of any web sites that offer free detailed info on stick welding? Thanks the retarded stick welder.
