weldability of gold

what welding processes are use to weld gold?

jody here from weldingtipsandtricks.com

pulse yag laser is the ticket for production of jewelry.

but there are a few people that have discovered how to do some precise welding of gold jewelry using a miller dynasty 200 dx with .020 or .040 electrodes. The dynasty has a 1 amp start.

It used to have some start issues, but newer models are very crisp if the electrode used is prepared right.

Welding gold NEW
by: Michael

Hey Jody,

Love your site and the information you share. I have a 200 DX and some gold (I mean very small amount!) I'd like to experiment with. I'm not in jewelry repair, I'm more interested in simply melting and separating small amounts of gold using GTAW at a low volume. Obviously there are much more efficient methods to melt and separate gold, but I want to attempt small scale operations without the overhead, mess, and energy of ovens, cupels, and molds, and a TIG torch is the only thing I can think of. Any experience welding with gold, metals needing flux, or just small amounts of metal? If this crazy idea sounds intriguing to you I'd be happy to share my findings (if I get the nerve to actually melt my gold...)

-Michael
