Welding 3/8" 8mm steel break test.

I'm currently trying to master the vertical up weld with the break test. I'm struggling with getting the right concave shape with proper root penetration. Teacher is saying a 70 degree angle (20 degrees above horizontal) but I'm feeling this is way to much of an angle. I may try the 5 or 10 degrees below tomorrow and see how it goes.
