Welding a CJP aluminum test plate?

When welding A CJP aluminum test plate IAW AWS D1.2, does the plate need to have the root pass/single pass, purged ?

I dont have access to the latest copy of D1.2 so this answer is based on other welding codes...

A purge is recommended but not always required on aluminum test plates.

like carbon steel, a purge will make a difference but it can be welded without.
