Welding by the shadow

by Rob
(NYC)

To run nice and straight stringers with 7018
on pipe, I use what's called " welding by the
shadow". The second pass casts a shadow
exactly at the highest part of the first. This
shadow is a perfect straight line! Just run
the puddle edge along the line formed where
the light from the arc disappears under the
first pass and so on with each following pass!

For the first pass... Use a wrap-a-round mark
and follow it! Happy welding :-)

ps. I'm a steamfitter with 16 years experience.
And also taught a journeyman welding course
"union" of course!!!

Rob, your posts are always worth reading...thanks for taking time to let us all benefit from your experience,
