for heavy wall like that I would crank up my amps to 150-160, use 1/8 thoriated tungsten and have my gas set to 25-30cfh for a good shielding, discoloration from the tungsten sometimes occur when shielding gas and torch angle change, I always pre-heat pipes over 80 sched before I start welding and also have a consistent feeding, but for a root past I would start at 90-100amps and crank up to 125 for hotpass.
so far it always passed x-ray :), this is only on my experience, but welders have different way of doing the job and it will depend to their preference.
Goodluck!

If your root was done properly(washed out) it should bend like rubber. TIG is pure with no contaminates needed to be removed, if it was contaminated gas you would have alot more problems than a blue electrode. It could also be your hot pass to much heat equals root suck back causeing incomplete pen.
