6010 rod

when you finish a 6010 rod and get ready to start a new one, strike your arc on the weld metal you just deposited. Don't strike it in the area you are about to weld. E6010 does not burn through it's own porosity all that well. E7018 is just the opposite, you always strike your arc ahead (in the path) of your weld and burn back over it. This is especially true for pipe, or an open butt weld. But 6010 cuts deep, if you follow this tip, you are more likely to pass an x-ray.

arc strikes

You are incorrect. You always strike forward of your deposited metal walk back to the crater and go. Thus burning out the arc strike. The only time you start on your deposited metal is when running your bead. this preheats the bead befor getting to the keyhole thus tying your starts together. Lots of miles of pipe and no repairs called by x ray to date.
