7018 Hater

I have a great tip for 7018 starts...grab a handful of them and throw them as far as you can. Then start using 6011's or 6010's.

but if you want to succeed in the welding game you MUST be proficient with all welding rods. from the lowly 6013 to the mighty 11018 these are simply tools of the trade that have to be mastered through practice and experience.

You will hate 6010 also if you try to weld cold rolled steel with it. Get used to the 7018.

If you hate 7018 electrodes you are obviously having problems laying down a good pass. Have you considered maybe you are doing something wrong? The problem may be your technique, condition of electrode, or machine. If you are a welder you probably realize if a job is to be welded to Code than there is a procedure to follow. What do you do if the procedure stipulates 7018?

60 series rod contains more brittle metal than 70. In this buisness it's not all about welder prefference. I love 7024 rod but you can't weld out of position with it.

when it positively has to work
by: j.w. stoll, jr

all welding rods don't work for all metals. i find when i absolutely have to weld reinforcing rods, 7018 is the way to go. welds with 6010 seem to crack when stressed.

Easy now....

Every rod has a different use and most don't weld exactly the same....if your having a hard time with 7018 but not with 6010 then maybe your 7018 isn't any good...have the rods gotten weld or damp? Does the flux fall off easy?

ive burned up hundreds of pounds of them, I like the way they weld. a tip i learned when starting an arc with a used rod, roll the flux off the end with your welding glove, slide the rod along your work and weld away
