Remove a broken bolt.

One way I often use to remove a broken bolt that has broken off flush is to lay a washer with center hole diameter that is slightly smaller than the bolt on top of the broken bolt. Then weld the washer and broken bolt together at the center hole, place an appropriate sized nut on top of the washer and weld the washer and nut together through the center of the nut. After it cools a bit, I can usually just use a wrench to unscrew the bolt.

Avoid the nightmare NEW
by: Stuart

I have to say that welding the broken bolt to the fitting that it has broken in, was the nightmare senario that raced through my mind; after seeing Jody show this tecnique. Your solution is great engineering and simple, nice one.

Removing broken bolt NEW

Because you don't want to weld the broken bolt to the metal it's threaded in. The washer helps prevent that. Thanks for the tip.

why not just weld the nut directly to the broken bolt? Is there any advantage to welding a washer on first?
