Stick welding

I'm about to take a test for open v-grove and I'm having trouble with my vertical up.

--------------------------------------------------

hold a tight arc.

if it sticks, increase amperage until it does not stick.

use an upside down U technique.

Vertical Up
by: Nick WI

The biggets key (for me) is to not draw the electrode out of the puddle, keep a good round circle going. I usually run 7018 1/8" at 105. I've found that the balance between heat and speed is a delicate one! Practice alot! If this was that easy they wouldn't have to test us.
Nick.

Use the U type welding and penetrate deep at the top of the stroke on each side. Its hard to explain but you need to carry your puddle as you move down to the next u. If you penetrate to long your puddle will overrun your rod. Weld temperature is critical as well as speed of movement. Your rod angle to the metal is also critical for your penatration. No matter what anybody tells you it takes practice. The more you weld the better you will be. And if you quit for a few years it takes a bit to start again. I have been welding, brazing, steel and cast iron on a buzz box for 50 years. Good luck!

i use 78-82 amps with 6010 and a 1/8 gap with a 1/8 land fit up is very important that it is right on. then when i punch through i hold for 3 seconds to get build up and slowly weave up and back to the puddle, slowly moving up should take about 3/4 of a rod to go 3 inches or so. with the hot pass i go up to 90 amps with 7018 and weave side to side and keep a tight arc you will use about 5-6 rods for 6 inches my cap i use 87 amps and hold about 3-4 seconds on each side to stop undercut the tighter weave the better the cap.
