read about lacing pass NEW
by: j.w.

if anyone is interested on how to make this lacing pass here's two books that show how to do it.
#1~ theory and practice of arc welding. published by van nostrand. this has to be one of the best all round instructional welding books i know of. it was written in the 40's and may be hard to obtain.
#2~pipe welding procedures by hoobasar rampaul probably easier to find.

beautiful NEW
by: davethewelder

I'm in love with this weave. I spent a few hours today trying to replicate this weld with some 5p. I found doing a "Z" weave but instead of pausing on the corners you loop it in a full circle before cutting across the middle to the other side. I feel the cap is a welders signature.

lacing pass NEW
by: jw

i think some people are under a mis-conception believing that this weld is somehow weaker because of it's width. it's used as a cover pass only. the real strength comes from the several passes underneath.

6010 can look just as good as 7018 NEW
by: Anonymous

It just has its own version of beauty, and it takes a real welder to bring that beauty out in a weave/lace

true or false NEW
by: krvm

Is it true that this type of weld can have a weak area in the center due to how wide it is? I've heard this before from lots of QCs.

Lace Cap
by: Anonymous

It was started by Columbia Gas I do believe earlier than than previously stated. I just cut out some piping from circa 1943 with a lace cap on a 6" side tee. I was Trained to cap all welds except Horizontal Butt with a lace cap...

"ButterFly Lace Cap"
by: " THE WELDER DON "

We use to call that, the "ButterFly Lace" cap.Used mainly on "horra - bozontal" (horizontal)weld positions !!!! There were only a handful of us that knew how to do that style welding when we first started doing it, but then some of the younger hands liked and learned to pick it up. It was done mostly in Circa 1950's-1970's.Don't see to many youngsters doing it now. Was done mostly in refineries, chemical plants and power plants.
