i am in my 3 semester for pipe welding in my local college. and i was wondering about suggestion for getting comfortable on welding pipe from 6-3 position. and 6-9 position . and do you switch hands when you are welding on different sides?

I wish there was a simple answer but it seems different for everyone.

Try lots of things with the machine off.
you will figure out what works and train some muscles too.

anyone else got some suggestions???

Weave vs stringers
by: SK

I just got my Welding degree and was in a pipefitting course. The 6g is challenging, but remember in the field you can steady yourself on the pipe. I use a vise clamp on the coupon to rest my arm on. When running stringer fills for a groove weld, I found making very small circles helps my rhythm and rod angle is critical. The side to side "z" weave works the best all the way up to and including the cap. My first stringers were bumpy, but after a couple hundred welds, you get an eye and feel for the electrode gap. Be patient, if everyone could do it, they wouldn't call it " skilled labor".

Getting comfortable
by: Dan

I'm currently going to Tulsa Welding School and I'm struggling with 6G on 4" pipe. My teacher showed me a way to weld up from 3 to 12 oclock on the pipe. He said try using your left hand to hold the electrode and and pull it towards you with your right hand. It takes time to get used to. I'm struggling to get my stringers to lay out flat. They look all clumpy. I tried turning the the amperage up to 85 and the stringer seem to flow a lot better on the cap.
