MIG welding tips and tricks - MIG welding Tip #15 ...

A drag or pull gun technique will give you a bit more penetration and a narrower bead.

A push gun technique will give you a bit less penetration, and a wider bead.

But Don’t get all carried away with arguing what is the perfect gun angle.

Results are all that counts.

Here's the Welding T shirt page.

A straight in 90 degree angle usually works fine, a drag angle works downhill on sheet metal. A push angle is what is needed for mig welding aluminum.

But what about when you don’t have a choice.... Like welding a gusset on the web of a beam. You might be standing on a ladder or maybe there is another beam in the way.

You do what you have to do to get the weld done and let all the students and noobs keep arguing about pushing vs pulling.

I have had the opportunity to test a whole bunch of welds ...pushing and pulling with all kinds of gun angles.

.......And there is just not that much difference as long as the person behind the mask is pretty good.
