welding stainless steel ( pipe test)

i have a lot of trouble with putting a hot pass and a nice cap on my pipe test. the pipe is usualy in a 45 degree position and my hot passes are getting better but the cap looks really bad, ive never been shown the proper way to do it. can you help me!!!!

It would be difficult for me to explain in detail but if your root and hot pass and fill passes are going ok, then it sounds like ...

1. you need to let the piece cool to just warm before capping

2. you need to either freehand using a tig finger, or learn to walk the cup..

walking the cup on a cap is like walking a 55 gal drum across the floor

cleaning and cooling NEW
by: henry

ive found that brushing or cleaning with a stainless wire wheel between passes seems to help me a lot, it seems to help the metal flow better. and the cleaning also helps in the cooling... ive also found that when capping, if i use a larger cup, walking the cup seems easier and more uniform... when you get more advanced, walking the cup with either hand will really help when walking the cup on a test, it gives you better access to the coupon with it on a 45. i hope this helps.
thanks
henry
