What 17 TIG Torch do are you looking for?

We have several different torches with Super Flex cables.. both rigid or flex head

This is my favorite 17 TIG torch.  Its a CK Worldwide CK 17 150 amp with super flex cable
Available in either 12.5ft and 25ft

When do you need a tig torch with a valve?

  • For the most part, a tig torch with a valve is used for Scratch start using a stick welder. See video here
  • Another reason for a valve is when using Multiprocess welders like the Primeweld MTS200. Which is a  MIG welder that also do stick and DC lift arc tig. see video here
  • Some welding machines are Lift arc TIG only without an internal  solenoid valve. A torch with a valve is needed to turn the argon off when not in use.
  • Another reason you might need a tig torch with a valve  is when your tig welders internal solenoid craps out and you need to get a job out the door.  I knew a fellow who got an unreasonably expensive  quote to replace his solenoid on a his miller syncrowave 250 so he just switched over to a torch with a valve. All he had to do was to connect directly to the flowmeter and control the argon flow at the torch.  Not ideal, in my opinion,  but it does allow  you to keep welding.

The ck 17 series tig torch is a 150 amp torch.
What if I need to Weld Hotter than 150 amps?

You can weld at higher amperage than 150 for short periods.

( I do it all the time)  but it will eventually get pretty hot in your hand if you push it hard at higher amperage.

Mostly, this happens on aluminum thicker than 1/8"

That is when you start thinking about a water cooled setup.

The main drawback to a water cooled setup is the cost.

Some say its worth every penny but if you are not ready yet and still need to weld at 200 amps, another option is a 200 amp air cooled tig torch like the CK trimline 26 below.

What is a CK TrimLine 26 TIG torch?

The Trim-Line™ 26, 200 amp, gas cooled torch has a smaller handle than a standard CK26 torch.

It feels almost identical to a ck 17 tig torch in your hand but handles more amperage.

A CK TrimLine 26 TIG torch can be your best option short of buying a water cooled setup.

Basic differences in the 20 style water cooled TIG torch and the air cooled 17 and 26 series.

đź’§ 20 Series TIG Torch (e.g., CK20, WP-20, SR-20, WT-20)

  • Amperage Rating: ~250 amps
  • Cooling: Water-cooled
  • Size/Weight: Small and lightweight—smaller than a 17, but higher capacity due to water cooling
  • Comfort: Runs much cooler in your hand, even at high amps
  • Common Uses: Ideal for precision TIG work, production welding, stainless, aluminum, exotic metals, aerospace welding, tool and die, mold repair.

  • 20 series torches are a favorite in high-end TIG work like aerospace and motorsports because they’re small, powerful, and stay cool.
  • You definitely need a water cooler for a 20 torch, which adds cost and some extra connections—but the comfort and performance are worth it for long sessions or higher-amp work.
  • If you’re welding aluminum with AC or doing any serious TIG on thick material, a 20 series tig torch is a difference maker compared to air cooled torches.
  • An exception is this...For low amperage work under 100 amps a 9 style air cooled torch will work great and feels the same as a water cooled 20 tig torch and you don't need a water cooler with a #9 torch.  But remember... A #9 style air cooled torch will get really hot if you go over 125 amps for extended periods.

I remember buying my first Miller Dynasty 200 and I got a #9 tig torch with it because most of my side hustle jobs were repairing mis machined carbon steel and stainless steel parts.

But then I got a job tig welding some small 1/4" aluminum parts.

I had to put the parts in the kitchen oven to preheat them to 200F just to be able to weld them at 200 amps with the Dynasty 200.

That torch got really hot really quick at 200 amps.

That is when I put a water cooled CK20 on it along with a water cooler and never looked back.
