machine selection

by Adam

I am going to be buying my first machine for at home use in my 4x4 hobbies. first use of it will be when i shorten and weld my frame. I have 1 and a half years of welding class under my belt but where my knowledge lacks is machine selection. what would be best for welding the frame on a 4x4 truck? flux core or MIG? frame thickness is around 5/16ths. would say a Lincoln SP-180 or similar machine work for this.

Adam,

i believe the Lincoln SP-180 and some good flux core would be a fair plan.

Bare wire mig with 75/25 gas should also work if you clean everything and bevel the joints and weld uphill on the vertical joints.

less cleanup with the bare wire but more penetration with the flux core.
