I am starting one of many certification tests and wanted to know if any reinforcement is necessary for the backside of my test plate, "Like a Tack-welded on reinforcement bar". I will be starting in the Vertical up position using (2)- 1"x6"x6" plates fitted as a single V-groove joint, with a 1/4" x 12"long backing plate. Anyway, I have noticed students using this idea, and then some were not. What should I do?

I would say not.
you need to know how much your welding technique is distorting the plates to compare with what is allowed by future employers.
some test shops will allow them, some wont.
some will also allow you to preload your test plates about 5 degrees to compensate for the distortion.
thanks for the post,
