SPLATTER PROTECTION

by Jim
(Iowa)

If you have to stick weld near something with threads or anything you don’t want splatter to stick too try this. Grab your torch and light It up, don’t add any oxygen. Run the flame over the threads or what ever. It will leave behind a layer of black soot. Now weld away. Splatter and dingle berries will not stick to the soot. When finished wipe the soot off with a rag.

good tip but i will add this caution...

dont get the soot anywhere you will weld. the soot is carbon and will cause the weld to crack.

i found out the hard way with a dirty rosebud tip and some real heavy steel i was preheating.

thanks for the post,

jody
