Understanding cleaning action of AC reverse polarity

by Sal
(LaGrangeville, NY)

If you get a thick piece of copper and hold the AC arc on it you can actually see the ions dancing off the copper plate. I suspect it has to do with the conductivity of copper but it could be the dark color lets you see it better. It is really quite amazing to watch. After I grind my tungsten I light up on a 1/4" hunk on copper and starting noticing the arc looked very big on AC when I did this. When I really looked at it I noticed I could literally see the ion cloud of cleaning action etching the copper. Try it you will be amazed. The longer the arc the more you can see it. Enjoy
