is the main advantage of OFWIs the ability to weld without electricity?

If you are talking about oxyfuel welding, then yes that is one advantage.

A few people still use oxyfuel for welding 4130 chromoly because of the slow heating and cooling rate...and a very few people swear by it for welding aluminum.

Some of those folks also sell training books and supplies for oxyfuel welding so it makes you wonder.

for most things, i prefer tig welding any day compared to gas welding.
