how to get the backing off the 3/8 butt weld

how do you remove the backing on the 3/8 stick welded vertical butt joint, because ive never used backing i just weld 1/4 with an open root. would be interested to know so i can give it a go.

I would cut the bend straps out first and then cut a pie wedge out of the strap where the root is.

then use a steel wedge to pop off the strap
