TIG Welding Thinwall Square tubing

Using the laywire technique along with 3/32' filler on thinwall square tubing helps with melting thru too much and pulling those oxides into the bead.

Clean metal, sharp tungsten, and good gas shielding are 3 keys

WELD PROCESS = TIG, GTAW, GAS TUNGSTEN ARC WELDING

METAL TYPE = CARBON STEEL SQUARE TUBING

THICKNESS = .063” WALL THICKNESS TUBE

WELD TYPE = GROOVE WELD

JOINT TYPE = BUTT JOINT

POSITION = FLAT

AMPERAGE = MACHINE SET TO  70  AMPS CONTROLLED WITH PEDAL  60-65 AMPS SWEET SPOT

TUNGSTEN = 2% LANTHANATED, 3/32"

FILLER WIRE = 3/32” ER70S2

POLARITY = DCEN

GAS FLOW = 20 CFH argon

CUP SIZE =  8

ADDITIONAL SETTINGS =   PRE FLOW = .5 SECPOST FLOW = 7 SEC

TIPS: KEEP A TIGHT ARC ..

practice restarts until they blend in

Aim for an arc length that is equal or less than the diameter of your tungsten electrode.

Torch angle can be forgiving provided your arc length is tight.

Keep the hot tip of the filler wire shielded by the argon envelope from the tig cup

Technique for Stopping and Restarting the bead

Being able to restart a TIG bead in a way that hides the restart is a great skill to work on.

One simple technique is to think of the crater where you stopped as a target with a bullseye.

Simple center up on the bullseye and increase amperage to match the crater and then proceed with the bead.
