With Aluminum lap joints,  the thinner you go, the more difficult it is.

.125" and even .090" are relatively easy but when you get to .063" and thinner, it gets more and more difficult to make a tight and good looking lap joint weld.

Some keys are:

  • good fit up with no gaps
  • tack welds smaller than final weld
  • use the right size tungsten tapered to a point
  • use the right gas flow rate (2-3 cfh per cup number)
  • small filler rod
  • tight arc length

WELD PROCESS = TIG, GTAW, GAS TUNGSTEN ARC WELDING

METAL TYPE = ALUMINUM 6061

THICKNESS =  .063"

WELD TYPE = FILLET WELD

TIPS: KEEP A FAIRLY TIGHT ARC AND WATCH TORCH ANGLE

higher ac frequency settings often require more amperage than lower settings

Aim for an arc length that is equal or less than the diameter of your tungsten electrode.Torch angle can be forgiving provided your arc length is tight.
