A 5g weld test is not quite as common as a 6g test but is used sometimes where a 6g is not applicable.

For example, it would be extremely rare for a pipeline welder to need a 6g test since around 99% of all pipeline welds are 5g weld position.

The 3 5g weld tests shown above are just a few of the possible 5g weld tests that are used to qualify welders for pipe welding as well as structural.

The 5G weld test is used to qualify pipe welders because it simulates real world welding conditions that are commonly seen in the field.

In a 5G position, the pipe is fixed horizontally, and the welder must move around the pipe to complete the weld, encountering different angles and positions as they progress. This test is important for several reasons:

  1. Simulates Real-World Conditions: Pipe welds on a pipeline job are most often welded in fixed positions in the field, where rotating the pipe isn't possible. The 5G position tests a welder’s ability to maintain consistent weld quality across varying angles, which mimics the challenges faced during actual pipe welding jobs.
  2. Tests Skill and Versatility: Welding in the 5G position requires proficiency in all main welding positions—flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead. A welder must adjust their technique as they move around the pipe, proving they can handle complex welding tasks.
  3. Ensures Structural Integrity: Pipes are critical components in many industries, including oil and gas, water treatment, and chemical processing. The 5G test ensures that the welder can produce welds that are strong, consistent, and meet industry standards for safety and durability.
  4. Qualification for Certification: Passing the 5G weld test is often a requirement for certifications from recognized bodies like the American Petroleum Institute (API) and American Welding Society (AWS). A 5g weld test demonstrates that the welder has the necessary skills to perform high-quality welds on pipes, which is a critical qualification for many employers.

By successfully completing a 5G weld test, a welder proves their ability to weld in all positions while re positioning their body to maintain a favorable rod angle as they progress around a pipe joint.

Depending on the code or specification requirements, 5g weld tests are sometimes X rayed to verify weld inegrity but are sometimes tested using a bend test.
