Gas tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) is more commonly called TIG welding.

Compared to other arc welding processes,  gas tungsten arc welding aka Tig welding is more precise and also more versatile.

TIG is more precise due to the fact that you can weld very thin metal using a foot pedal or torch amperage control…and more versatile due to the fact that by simply switching filler metal and a few settings, you can quickly switch from tig welding carbon steel, to stainless, to aluminum, to titanium, or practically any metal you can imagine. 

What is gas tungsten arc welding used for?

Gas tungsten arc welding is used wherever high quality precision welds are needed.

Here are just a few examples where gas tungsten arc welding aka Tig welding is commonly used:

• Thin auto body panels made from carbon steel
• 4130 chromoly tubing in both aviation and motorsports industries
• Stainless steel tubing for sanitary piping used for food service like breweries, hemp extraction, dairies, etc.
• Corrosion and heat resistant alloys like  321 stainless, Hastelloy X, Inconel 718 
• Thin and thick aluminum sheet as well as aluminum castings
• Magnesium sheet,  tubing and castings

2. Clean welds without spatter or slag

What is the best TIG welder for a beginner?

I have welded with most of the major brands of TIG welders and some of them are just too expensive for most beginners.

In my opinion, the best TIG welder for a beginner should be affordable, have simple settings, and have great customer service.

Simplified TIg settings

In my opinion, the primeweld 225 is one of the best choices in affordable tig welders.

The problem with most other really affordable tig welders is usually the foot pedal and the torch are just bad and clunky.
